Lake Manyara National Park – Ngorongoro Conservation Area by Roberto Pierobon

September 28th, 2012

7:30am wake, breakfast and second day of our photographic safari. We take down our tents, load them on the Jeep and head toward the second park: Manyara National Park, a stretch of land about fifty kilometers long and eight kilometers wide, where there is the lake with the same name, and reaches the Rift Valley slope. Once we arrive at the Masai village of Mto Wa Mbu (mosquito river in Swahili) we stop at Twinga camp (Zebra in Swahili), where we pitch our tents again, pick up our packed lunch and jump in the car once again. After few minutes we enter the park, but unlike the first one, this is much greener and the outside temperature is nicer. After a thrilling close encounter with a herd of elephants (they jump out of the forest and surround our car to cross the street), we keep shooting (pictures!) like crazy, till it’s time to go back to the camp. When we are sitting around our dining table in the company of the guide, we decided to stay here for the next few days as well, since it’s about one hour away from the next park and taking down the tents and put them up again, loading and unloading the car each time, it’s just a waist of time. There’s music by the pool that night but we decide to skip the celebrations since we have another busy day ahead of us.

7:30am wake, breakfast and third day of photographic safari. We pick up our usual packed lunch and drive to Ngorongoro National Park, which is located inside a crater at about 2200mt above the sea level and covers an area of about 265 square kilometers. This is the biggest caldera in the world and it is part of the World Heritage Site. We need to fill out the permits again and after that we can finally enter the park, driving along the edge of the crater until we start our descent at the opposite side. We are hoping to sea the lions here, but I guess this is not our lucky day, at least until we decide to go back to the camp and finally meet a young specimen on our way. Once at the camp, we take a nice shower, have a nice dinner followed by a deserved bier and then we all go to bed.
